Why You Should Hire an Interior Designer

There are a number of reasons why homeowners should hire a qualified interior designer over an interior decorator. For those of you who are confused don’t be embarrassed, many folks are. No, these professions are not the same. An interior decorator is merely a person who has a knack for decorating interior spaces but has no formal training, while a designer is a trained professional with a degree.

Interior designers must also receive a licence, which means that they must answer to a licencing board if there is a complaint filed against them. This gives clients a legal recourse when they are dissatisfied with the work.

And unlike decorators, designers don’t merely work on residential projects they also consult on commercial ones. In fact, many designers work for architectural firms, retail stores or construction companies. It is their job to help the architects plan and design the interiors of the buildings or homes. For example, a designer might help plan an opulent hotel lobby in London or a group of luxury Spanish villas .

Decorators simply do not have the experience or the training to handle larger projects. For this reason, when most homeowners discover just what it is designers actually do, they assume that they will not be interested in smaller projects. This, however, is often incorrect.

The fact is that many interior designers, especially ones that run their own businesses, are more than happy to take on any project, no matter how big or small. Of course they do charge a bit more than decorators, but just remember that you are not only paying for education and experience, but also for security.
